Torch Theatre Summer School
Running since 2009, our popular annual summer school at Torch Theatre is open to all aged 6+ and is focused on offering affordable access to high quality creative experiences led by professional dance artists to the community in Pembrokeshire. Working with a different theme each year, and linked to our performance projects, this summer school is totally inclusive. We aim to create a supportive and nurturing environment for people of all backgrounds and abilities to come together, create and perform with us. Scroll down for this year's info...

After a difficult year full of cancellations, adaptations, too much screen time and not enough social connection, we are delighted to say we will be back at Torch Theatre with our legendary creative dance summer school this August
Every-BODY is a dancing body
Since 2009 we’ve been gathering at Torch Theatre for a week of dynamic dance styles and creative dance culminating in a performance. We welcome people from across Pembrokeshire and beyond of various ages, backgrounds and abilities. Everybody is welcome, everybody is challenged, everybody is celebrated and everybody has the chance to create and perform in their own way, collaborating and dancing together with peers, families and professional dance artists. Some of our young dancers have been coming regularly for the best part of a decade, while some come and go. Some have gone on to train and work as dance artists themselves, while some just come because they want to have fun and enjoy moving. We are a family, and we always welcome new friends with open arms.
Safe Space = Creative Space
We are working closely with the Torch Theatre staff to make sure the summer school will be safe and fun for everyone. It may be a little different this year, and we want to remain responsive to the wants and needs of whoever would like to come. What you can definitely expect is to learn fun and dynamic dance techniques, in our usual supportive, creative environment in which every participant gets to make up their own dances and collaborate with peers, guided by experienced professional dancers and choreographers. We will all work together to build a show and perform in some way at the end of the week (exactly what that looks like will be subject to change and safety measures, but we will make sure everyone gets that sense of achievement we’ve become use to at Joon.)
We aren’t sure how busy it will be yet, so we have booked two teachers, and if loads of you sign up we will be adding a third, so far we have Joon Artistic Director Zosia Jo and one of our favourite and regular teachers Kim Noble, of Kitsch’n’Sync Collective. Both are fully DBS checked, have years of teaching experience and work professionally as performers and choreographers. Zosia runs the show here at Joon as well as teaching other dance artists how to teach inclusively (among other things) at University Wales Trinity Saint David, and Kim has taught more Joon Summer Schools than any other artist (other than Zosia). Kim’s worked with Bombastic and many other companies on dance for young audiences as well as creating amazing performances for festivals and public space with the inimitable Kitsch’n’Sync, which she runs with Kylie Ann Smith. We are so excited to have Kim back for this crucial year.
